Understanding the Difference Between Brokerage Commissions and ETF Expense Ratios

ETF expense ratios are disclosed as a percentage of a fund’s average net assets and are paid out of the fund’s assets, lowering the net asset value. Brokerage commissions are flat fees paid to a broker each time ETF shares are bought or sold and do not appear in the fund’s prospectus fee table.
